LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK & PRESERVE
The Sand Dunes are approximately one hour and ten minutes East and North of Dodgeton Creek Inn. The Dunes are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape. You will feel like you are in the middle of a desert upon arriving. Sand sledding and hiking are the most common activities. There is a great Visitor Center with interactive exhibits.
BEAR LAKE
Approximately 2 miles South of Cuchara is the turn-off to Blue and Bear Lakes. A 5 mile road along the banks of the Cuchara River brings you to Bear Lake. A very scenic trail takes you from Bear Lade down to Blue Lake. Bear Lake has terrific fishing in season. Both lakes have campgrounds and restrooms.
The Devil's Stair Steps is just one of over 400 Dikes that surround the Spanish Peaks. The dikes were formed when volcanoes had lava flows, the lava flowed into fractures in sediments rocks and hardened. Over millions of years the surrounding soil eroded away, leaving the igneous dikes that we see today.
Cuchara Mountain Park
Mike's latest park news for the ski lift: (Jan 2026)
Getting an old chairlift running and up to state safety standards is no small feat, but volunteers at Cuchara Mountain Park, west of Walsenburg, accomplished it. Abandoned when the original ski area closed a quarter century ago, Lift 4 is set to again carry winter sports enthusiasts starting this Saturday, January 17.
The ski area will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from about 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the rest of the season, depending on weather and snow conditions. Visit our friends at CPR.org for this posting here.
Other news for the ski lift: (Dec 2025)
After years of fundraising and volunteer work, the refurbished Chair 4 at Cuchara Mountain Park in Huerfano County has completed a state-required test. That’s according to an email announcement from Panadero Ski Corporation, the nonprofit organization that manages the park located about 75 miles southwest of Pueblo. Part of the state test included a lift evacuation demonstration by the park’s volunteer ski patrol. See the full article here.
Cuchara Mountain Park Ski Patrol is onsite on weekends.
